Considered a great austere chasm by the first Europeans, the Grand Canyon was observed by a Spanish expedition in 1540. For hundreds of years thereafter, the Canyon’s rugged landscape was viewed as perilous until widespread appreciation for the wilderness emerged in the 1800’s.
