In late afternoon, deep shadows emerge as the sun drops closer to the horizon. At Pima Point, the expanse of the Grand Canyon is dramatically exhibited. This rugged, austere landscape impressed early visitors as being ominous and forbidding. European expeditions portrayed the "black depths" of the Canyon as "the most sublime spectacle on earth."
