YELLOWSTONE RIVER

The mighty Yellowstone River slows to a crawl during winter. Ice chunks and snowdrifts, along its banks block the water's flow. Explorers and fur traders followed this river charting new routes or checking their traps. Winter was slow-going as many had to portage their canoes and supplies overland.
