Prospectors came to Death Valley during the "boom or bust era" around 1849. They were seeking gold nuggets hidden in rocks, but instead they discovered temperatures of 120° F in the shade, a little over one inch of rainfall a year and a maze of salt ridges strewn across the parched desert floor.
