Gayfeather

Plume-like purple flowers, gay-feathers are arranged on slender spikes. When in bloom, these flowers can be seen coloring dry, open areas. Gayfeathers prefer sandy soils. The plant grows from an underground structure called a corm, which is a layered bulb much like an onion.
