COCONINO SANDSTONE

Late afternoon lighting casts a lavender tint upon the side canyons at Mather Point. The light tan pedestals are composed of Coconino Sandstone. This prominent sandstone layer can be traced across the canyon walls. It was deposited millions of years ago during an arid period of time and sits on top of the reddish Hermit Shale.
