YELLOW VIOLETS

Violets are among the first spring flowers to bloom. They grow in moist soils, usually in shady meadows and foothills. Five brightly colored petals loosely folded around a center make a delicate arrangement. There is a sac'like spur at the base of the lowest petal, which provides a landing platform for insects and contains nectar.
