GATES OF THE MOUNTAINS

Upon entering a nearly six-mile stretch of the Missouri River where it is channeled to approximately 150 feet in width, Lewis noted in his journal that they traveled between "dark and gloomy cliffs" that rose 1200 feet above the river. He named this area the Gates of the Rocky Mountains, which later became known simply as Gates of the Mountains.
