BITTERROOT RIVER

Under the direction of a Shoshone guide named "Toby," the Lewis and Clark Expedition made camp near the mouth of Lolo Creek before trekking over the Bitterroot Range. Lewis wrote, "…we continued our rout down the W. side of the river about 5 miles further and encamped on a large creek… we called this Creek Travellers rest."
