Devils Tower National Monument

Early Indians called Devils Tower - Mateo Tepee, meaning Grizzly Bear Lodge. According to the Kiowas, the fluted rock form-ations resulted from the scratch-ing by bear's claws as they vainly reached for seven Kiowa girls on the summit. The Great Spirit saved the girls and made them the seven stars of Pleiades.
