Scalloped white edging accentuates this deep turquoise hot pool located within West Thumb Geyser Basin. In hydrothermal areas, rain and snow seep through the ground and are collected in hardened underground lava plateaus. The water is heated by magma or molten rock deep within the earth. When it resurfaces, hot pools may be formed.
